About Us

Stamford Choral is a large mixed choir; its history stretches back to at least 1879, the heyday of choral societies, and today we are in good health with a membership of around 115, of various ages. Under the skilled leadership of its professional musical director, Jeremy Jepson, the choir performs three concerts a year.

The programme draws mainly from the classical sacred choral repertoire but also has an eye to twentieth-century composers as well as an interest in contemporary composers. Whatever the repertoire, the goal is to create a vibrant, well-blended and musical sound, worthy of the music we perform. Our audiences appreciate the choir’s commitment to high standards and the choir enjoys an excellent relationship with its audience, many of whom travel some distance to support us.

Since 2001 our main summer concerts have often taken place in Peterborough Cathedral, accompanied by a professional orchestra. Christmas concerts generally take place in Stamford School Hall, often with organ accompaniment. It is a more intimate venue but rewarding nonetheless. Other performances have used venues such as Barn Hill Methodist Church, Stamford, and Belvoir Castle. The choir looks to work with specialist ensembles where possible and our 2012 Bach St John Passion performance in Peterborough Cathedral and our 2015 performance of Messiah in Stamford School Hall provided members with an opportunity to work with period orchestras, so that a more authentic experience could be created for singers and audience alike. Both concerts were incredibly well received.

The choir aims to use high quality soloists, especially when employing professional orchestras, and is always keen to use emerging talents. Recent performers include Penelope Appleyard, Joel Williams and Ben Hymas.

We also aim to provide opportunities for local singers and instrumentalists of excellent quality who may not necessarily be full-time soloists. If you are interested in solo opportunities, we would be pleased to hear from you and encourage you to contact our concert secretary. Our Christmas and summer concerts are often used to promote links with local performers, schools and choirs.

Rehearsals for the Spring Term start on 8th January. Join us for the joint concert with Stamford Endowed Schools Stamford on Tuesday evenings, 7:15pm - 9:15pm. We will be preparing Bach's "St. John Passion" on 23rd March 2019, in the De Montfort Hall, Leicester. New singers are always welcome in the opening weeks of each term, so please do come along, if you're interested in singing with us. Please get in touch with us ahead of the new term for this particular term as arrangements are different to our usual schedule.

For this year's Malcolm Sargent concert (a triennial event we hold with Stamford Endowed Schools) we will perform Bach's dramatic, fast-paced and concise re-telling of the passion story. Period orchestral accompaniment will be provided by the Musical and Amicable Society, we have a line up of six exciting professional soloists with Nathan Vale taking the role of the Evangelist (narrator) and a chorus, representing various crowds and groups in the narrative, numbering over 200. In a first for this event, we will be performing in the fabulous surroundings of the De Montfort Hall in Leicester which will ensure a fabulous acoustic and visual experience for everyone involved, both performers and audience. It promises to be an amazing event, well worth the trip! Tickets via the De Montfort Hall Box Office.
